Stages After ICANN Approves New Top-Level Domains

Sunrise
Usually 30-60 Days

Sunrise phase is the first step toward a new TLD launch. In Sunrise, trademark owners claim their domains before they're publically available. Domains contested by multiple trademark owners typically go to auction.

Landrush
Usually 30 Days

Landrush is the first launch phase open to the public. Anybody can claim domains during Landrush so long as it wasn't already registered during Sunrise. Domains in Landrush typically cost more to register with contested domains going to auction.

General Availability
Official Launch

General Availability is the final phase of a TLD launch. This is when the public can purchase all of a TLD's available domain names. In General Availability, names are usually first-come-first-serve, but some TLDs may have a pre-order system in place before General Availability opens.

ICANN, the organization overseeing the new TLDs program, has already started reviewing new TLDs applications. That means new TLDs can start to roll out as soon as their applications are approved. Right now, we estimate that will be sometime in Q2 of 2013, but dates change frequently so it's important to start your Watchlist now so you don't miss your chance to get the domains you want.
